Blithely Bound for Breakage

January 13, 2018

It is an amazing exercise to reflect over how much I have pounded down the hatch over many decades. Whatever was there to eat, I ate. Except beets, of course.

  • I came
  • I saw
  • I devoured.

Usually gluttony brings no immediate consequence.

Food or pretend food did not matter. Although, pretend food didn’t fill as many shelves in those years.

Take Cheerios: (from Wikipedia)

  • Apple Cinnamon Cheerios (1988–present)
  • Banana Nut Cheerios (2008–present)
  • Berry Burst Cheerios (2003–present)
  • Berry Burst Cheerios – Strawberry (2003–)
  • Berry Burst Cheerios – Triple Berry (2003–present)
  • Cinnamon Cheerios (2004–present)
  • Cinnamon Burst Cheerios (2011–present)
  • Cinnamon Nut Cheerios (1980–present)
  • Chocolate Cheerios- (2010–present)
  • Frosted Cheerios (1995–present)
  • Fruity Cheerios (2006–present)
  • Honey Nut Cheerios (1979–present)
  • Millenios (Cheerios) (1999–2000)
  • MultiGrain Cheerios (1991–present)
  • MultiGrain Dark Chocolate Crunch Cheerios (2014–)
  • MultiGrain Peanut Butter Crunch Cheerios (2012–)
  • Oat Cluster Cheerios Crunch (2007–present)
  • Team (USA) Cheerios (1996) – (special edition, discontinued)
  • Very Berry Cheerios (2017–present)
  • Yogurt Burst Cheerios – Strawberry (2004–present)
  • Yogurt Burst Cheerios – Vanilla (2004–present)

None of these existed when I was in high school. Thankfully. There was one kind: the original. Is it the greatest food? Probably not, but fewer creative additions than these lab-created mutations.

Cereal is (was) basically grain, right? To pick on the Berry version of Cheerios, take a look here. No need to read in detail. Just the size of the ingredient list stammers (yes, I meant stammers) the imagination and prefigures the digestive system scratching its collective head over what to do with it:

Whole grain oats, sugar, corn syrup, oat bran, corn starch, salt, blueberry powder, canola oil, cane sugar, tripotassium, phosphate, strawberry powder, cranberry powder, raspberry powder, vegetable and fruit juice color, natural flavor. vitamin E (mixes tocopherols) added to preserves freshness. Vitamins and minerals: calcium carbonate zinc and iron (mineral nutrients), Vitamins c (sodium ascorbate), a b vitamin (niacinamide), vitamins b6 (pyridoxine hydrochloride), vitamin b1 (thiamin mononitrate), vitamin a (palmitate), vitamin b2 (riboflavin), a b vitamin (folic acid), vitamin b12, vitamin d3.

I almost looked for the eye of a newt and the toe of a frog.

Those probably synthetic vitamins likely were added in to replace what was partially stripped out during the processing. Think Wonder Bread.

For many years, I thought: does it taste good? Then chow was on. Third and fourth helpings were no matter, usually easily accomplished. Go for the gold.

I could pack it in without packing it on. I shared my Dad’s DNA. Amounts or substance of such amounts seemed not to matter.

“Seemed” is the key word.

This is probably part of the reason for my likely self-inflicted diagnosis in Sept 2016 of prostate disease. Other probable reasons, also blithely self-inflicted:

  • Toxins
  • Sedentariness
  • Female hormonal overload
  • Impure foods and non-foods
  • Inflammation

I have been thinking about marshmallows. Pardon my ignorance, but until a few years ago I never knew this was a God-given plant. I just never thought to inquire. Everybody knew it was that pillowy foam substance created somewhere for melting in hot chocolate, or burning in flame to quick-create carcinogens. Since learning this, though, curiosity prompted me to know how the plant is used in the making of mini-pillows.

(Did you hear about the man who dreamed he ate a giant marshmallow? In the morning, his pillow was gone. Old Boy Scout joke.)

Look at the label from Jet-Puffed Mini Marshmallows – great for hot chocolate, right? (To which I have to now say: Ewww – barely meant for human consumption.)

There’s not a sniff or hint of the real thing. This leads me to wonder what the actual plant offers in fragrance and flavor. How many hundred of these have assaulted my digestive system over 5 decades, before I stopped?

So what’s that long name near the bottom of the list? Going for Wikipedia’s definition:

Tetrasodium pyrophosphate, also called sodium pyrophosphate, tetrasodium phosphate or TSPP, is a colorless transparent crystalline chemical compound with the formula Na4P2O7. It is a salt composed of pyrophosphate and sodium ions. Toxicity is approximately twice that of table salt when ingested orally.

Well then. I thought the “pyro” might have hinted at the quick flammability at the firepit, where the … substance … bursts into flame just when you thought you had attained snack perfection.

Do you also see it has twice the toxicity of table salt, which suggests table salt has toxicity? Because if table salt has “zero”, then twice “zero” is “zero”.

Here’s an actual marsh mallow plant:

Evidently marshmallow was originally medicinal, using the sap and root. Did you know this?

How did we get to a completely concocted confection, with no relationship to the actual original substance? I want to taste the original now.

This is just one example of our endless drive to create things that our stomachs have no process with which to deal. This is all to say, I haven’t treated myself well for many years.

It felt fine, though. That’s the deceptive part.

But when you overload systems for a long time, sooner or later breakage occurs somewhere. Our overloaded immune and hormonal systems do not possess supernatural capability. They were conceived and created supernaturally, no mistake. But they must undergo the rigors with which we slam them day and late into the sleep-deprived night. Chronic syndromes and disease are results.

My best guess is this is the description of my case. And since it took years to develop, there is not a quick bullet fix. Many radical changes are necessary.

Do you have cancer? Do you like your ice cream? I sure do.

I don’t eat any.

The beleaguered body needs all help it can get. I ask God every day for His healing touch and I believe in it. I wonder sometimes if He has assigned Himself to continually come along and undo the damage we have wreaked on our beings!

This includes body, mind, and spirit.

I will continue to learn about this the rest of my life, which I trust by the grace of God, will extend enough to see my great grand-kids beyond just babyhood.

I leave you with this:

Take a look at what is contributing to possible system failure. A lot can be avoided.

Please write in and tell me what you think.
