Solving the Pollution Problem?

August 3, 2017

We have it all wrong on what pollution of this earth involves.

The physical earth is polluted, certainly. True pollution, though, is a rejection, or at least a distortion, of God and His covenant.

People groan over the pollution and destruction of the planet, yet don’t realize, or possibly some actively reject, the fact that God is sovereign and requires absolute submission.

Caring for the earth was a substantial part of His original commission. But that’s not the whole of it. To be unlike God is to be polluted. And polluted people produce more pollution.

Look at what Isaiah wrote:

The earth mourns and withers;
the world wastes away and withers;
the exalted people of the earth waste away.
The earth is polluted by its inhabitants,
for they have transgressed teachings,
overstepped decrees,
and broken the everlasting covenant.
Therefore a curse has consumed the earth,
and its inhabitants have become guilty;
the earth’s inhabitants have been burned,
and only a few survive.
The new wine mourns;
the vine withers.
All the carousers now groan.
The joyful tambourines have ceased.
The noise of the jubilant has stopped.
The joyful lyre has ceased.
They no longer sing and drink wine;
beer is bitter to those who drink it.

Isaiah 24:4-9

Real pollution is that of the heart, spirit, and mind of man. If pollution resides there, it will express itself visibly in some way.

Ultimately, all pollution stems at its root from some element of rejection of the Word and the ways of the Lord, the Creator and Owner of all that we see and don’t see. With sin comes deterioration, degradation, rot, spoilage, damage, greed, and devaluation.

  • Our culture is polluted.
  • Our economy is polluted.
  • Our relationships are polluted.
  • Our thinking is polluted.

Here is an example of this in action: people who think the Dakota pipeline may hurt the environment, did themselves hurt the environment by their protest. Do they really care for the environment? Evidently not, and the environment of their own hearts and minds needs the cleaning.

Can we fix our financial brokenness and ignore this at the same time? No. Any improvement will be band-aids, temporary, and putting off the guaranteed meltdown. Blessing and obedience to Almighty God are partners.

What is Gods’s requirement really? To love Him with all heart, soul, mind, and strength, and other people as much as ourselves. I cannot expect the blessing of the Holy One if I offend Him on a daily basis, and live for myself.

I cannot claim to love God if I disobey what He says and Who He is. That applies to persons and to groups, including large groups like nations.
