How to Achieve Success

Something caught my attention the other day when I was reading in Proverbs:

My son, if you accept my words
and store up my commands within you,
listening closely to wisdom
and directing your heart to understanding;
furthermore, if you call out to insight
and lift your voice to understanding,
if you seek it like silver
and search for it like hidden treasure,
then you will understand the fear of the Lord
and discover the knowledge of God.
For the Lord gives wisdom;
from His mouth come knowledge and understanding.
He stores up success for the upright;
He is a shield for those who live with integrity
so that He may guard the paths of justice
and protect the way of His loyal followers.

Proverbs 2:1-8

Wisdom has to be valued to be accessible.

Did you notice that wisdom doesn’t ordinarily just fall on people? You have to search it out. It has to be valued – more than precious metal.

Wisdom is tied to the “fear of the Lord”.

Without reverential awe of God, wisdom is elusive. People pontificate profusely, multiplying words that sound at first like wisdom. At least that’s what the pontificator desires the hearers to think. But is God in the picture? If not, foolishness ensues.

I highlighted the phrase above that punched me in the arm and made me pay attention:

He stores up success for the upright;
He is a shield for those who live with integrity…

The path to success is upright living and integrity. This does not mean there is not hard work or planning involved. Hard work is part of integrity.

Can anyone be said to succeed if he achieves something, but uses lying and cheating on the way to the ‘top’? Living with uprightness and integrity clears a path to success.

God is active in preparing and storing success for the future. How reassuring that is.

Keep living right.

Keep your integrity.

Prepare to receive what God is storing up for you.
