Craving in the Wilderness

Psalms 106:14
They were seized with craving in the wilderness
and tested God in the desert.

When things are dry, mundane, routine, or confusing, cravings can arise. We may feel unsatisfied, comfortless, depressed, or frustrated. That may lead us to look around us for something to massage the discomfort or fill the void. Longings for the transcendent are relentless.

Trust in the character of God will make the difference. If I become impatient with Him, or believe He is not paying attention, or that He does not care, or that He is not providing what I need, or that He does not exist, I am likely to take action. That action will probably not be good. It will not fill the need I feel.

God is present in the wilderness, but if I do not believe that, my thinking and actions will go astray. Much chaos in our world can be explained by our attempt to fill our restless cravings in misdirected and self-centered ways.
